 For Mark McGovern, everything has changed. As a participant in Community Connections (CCI) Cape Cod Life Skills Art Therapy program his life has been turned upside down and the results are all positive. Art Therapy has, “opened up a side of my brother that I have never seen. He calls himself an “artiste” and is so proud and feels he has a purpose,” says Mark’s sister, Dacey McGovern, of Keller Williams Realty.
Mark is not the only client whose life has been affected by the program. Many other participants have donated their artwork to the annual Community Connections Gala by the Sea, sold note cards designed with their own work and displayed their pieces in art shows around the community. In the month of February the Cape Cod Art Therapy artists displayed their work at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod in Yarmouth. The show ran from Feb. 5 to Feb. 14 and was open to all. (View the Photo Album) Sue Johnson, Community Connections Chief Operating Officer, who attended the exhibit opening said, “It’s a great source of pride to see our artists out in the community showcasing their talent and success!”
Art has proven instrumental in enriching the lives of the developmentally disabled community by helping boost self esteem, improve mental, emotional and even physical states while helping to improve the quality of life. Clients are able to work directly with local artists to learn new techniques and develop strong partnerships with community art organizations.
